Why Do Some UK Property Investors Continually Lose Money?

Unseasoned and novice UK property investors are venturing further into the world of fundamental property investing mistakes.

Their basic problem starts off with thinking about where in the UK they can buy investment property. This is a logical thought but after this, they aim to profit by trying to follow the strategies that successful investors recommended decades ago. This is where it can start to go horribly wrong.

They proceed assuming that they can easily replicate the methods through which such investors made their money and they also assume that such methods of investment are still lucrative today.

Few can argue with the fact that these property moguls made millions when they launched into business decades ago, this is why novice investors are too caught up in the TV shows which showcase the lifestyle of these rich and famous property gurus.

These UK property investors then follow through by imitating the strategy of these experienced investors without question and without understanding that the existing property market is a whole lot different from what it used to be.

If you consider property which you bought between a decade to fifteen years ago anywhere in the United Kingdom, you would find out that it would be most likely that the rent the property accrued would cover the mortgage. Nowadays however, you find out that people don’t enjoy the same luxuries which they used to and each investment decision has to be undertaken with care and you need to add up all the necessary figures to ensure that you do not run out of funds.

This is the problem which UK property investors put themselves in when they copy old strategies without completely understanding the nature of what they are doing and the resultant implications of their actions.

TV shows don’t tell the whole story, while it is clear that these property moguls must have reaped huge fortunes years ago, it does not necessarily mean that if these individuals started afresh today using the exact same strategies, they would still recoup the same amount of money or more.

Think of it, in the nineties the rave was buying off plan properties, at this time investors simply made the most of their money by putting down deposits and reaping the profits when the property was completed at least 12 to 24 months in the future.

This situation does not work nowadays, the market for off plan properties has become more or less over saturated, and a lot of developers are getting into ventures not with the owner occupiers in mind but with the property investor in mind.

You now have apartment blocks which get completed and valued at less than what investors initially paid for them in the off plan stage.

UK property investors throughout the country who fail to do their homework are falling into deep pits of trouble because they are staking their success on all the wrong strategies with the hope that they will succeed in building their portfolios as quickly as they possibly can.

Such people fail to understand that the basics of making money in any field, starts with knowing the market you are operating in. You should know when it is the right time to buy one particular kind of property or the other.

Current UK property investors have to understand how they can respect the prevailing market conditions. These investors will have to conform and adapt to the vagaries of the market. Such investors will also require research and negotiation skills, nowadays it’s no longer about how to buy property, it’s about how much below market value you can buy the property so it becomes profitable now and remains profitable in future.
